The Lake of Lugano, also called Ceresio is an alpine lake that is places between the Switzerland's Canton Ticino, the province of Varese and Como.
It has a glacial origin with a irregular shape; the surfarce is 50.5 kmq and its deepest point is 288 meters in front of Albogasio.
2/3 of the area of the lake belongs to Switzerland, 1/3 to Italy (Lombardia).
On the swizterland border of the lake there are well know tourist places: Lugano, Melide e Bissone.

Lavena and Ponte Tresa, at the west side, since the time of the roman colonization have been the theatre of wars for the control of the bridge that links the opposite sides.
