Its decline began in 16th century, when, under the
French domain, it was used as storerooms, horse stalls and barracks for
defensive purposes. With the Spanish government, after 1526, the castle was
enclosed by a star shaped fortification, built around it, as an additional
defense medium.

The castle remained a fortress, even
under the Savoy and Austrian occupation from 1706-1796, until the Napoleonic
conquests in 1796.
A few years later, Napoleon
decided to demolish the external structure and the castle had serious damage, because
it had been used to receive the troops.
